According to a recent study, 40% of heat-related deaths in the US happened to people over 65 years of age. Older adults should be more careful of overheating as their bodies can’t cope up with excessive heat and they are likely to get dehydrated. Chronic medical conditions and prescription medicines affect their body’s ability to respond to heat and regulate the temperature.

Drink Water – Elderly people are more likely to get dehydrated during summer as their body loses the ability to conserve water. They can’t adjust to the temperature changes and also forget to have water at short intervals which is very important.
Consult Doctors – They need to check with doctors that the medications they are on is not affected by high temperatures especially if there is no air-conditioning at home. Some medicines are not very effective in high temperatures. They should also seek their advice on preventable medical condition which can be aggravated due to high temperatures.
Appropriate Dressing – Elderly people should wear lighter cloths during summer. Natural fabrics such as cotton are much better than synthetic fibers as it is much cooler and comfortable.
Protection of Eyes – Elderly people must wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun. The rays coming from the sun may irritate and harm their eyes. Wearing sunglasses will protect the eyes from UV rays which are harmful to eyes.
